Trends and Best Practices in Health Care Cybersecurity Insurance Policy

Abstract:

The healthcare sector in the United States is experiencing an increase in cybersecurity breaches due to healthcare data being one of the most desired commodities in the black market. Healthcare companies have thereby invested in cybersecurity insurance to protect themselves against the threat of financial and reputational loss; however, the uptake of cybersecurity insurance in healthcare is significantly lower than in other industries, with only 30% of healthcare organizations having cybersecurity insurance in 2017. Healthcare organizations should ensure that their policy covers liability coverage against claims for damages, regulatory fines, and losses from business interruption. It is also recommended that healthcare organizations perform a comprehensive assessment of their information technology security capabilities and needs before purchasing a cybersecurity insurance policy.
