Security and Privacy Concerns of the "Internet of Things" (IoT) in IT and its Help in the Various Sectors across the World

Abstract:

The Internet of Things (IoT), or the “interconnection of computing devices” that are “embedded and…identifiable within the infrastructure of the internet,” poses a variety of new challenges for cybersecurity and policy. The vulnerabilities of many technologies in the IoT present concerns for data privacy and security, as well as for freedom of innovation and usage as policy is developed to mitigate these concerns. This article explores the potential for privacy and security breaches as a result of issues like low energy and computing capabilities, wireless unreliability, and physical vulnerability. In particular, the article examines IoT security applications in autonomous vehicles, healthcare services, logistics, buildings and offices, and the media and entertainment industry. Despite privacy concerns in all the aforementioned areas, Mohammad also acknowledges that IoT devices can be used to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance safety and security in these industries. The transparency of such devices (and the system as a whole) is thus paramount in ensuring that data security and privacy concerns are diminished and appropriately communicated to users. The article concludes by emphasizing the importance of political considerations when implementing IoT technologies, as advocates for complete data privacy could use IoT development as a “criticism platform.”
