A review on cybersecurity vulnerabilities for unmanned aerial vehicles

Abstract:

This paper serves as a survey of 29 scientific papers and 11 attack reports concerning small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS/UAVs). This is to draw conclusions regarding the risks in using UAVs for critical infrastructure inspection. In recent years, small UAVs have become popular in their ability to inspect critical infrastructure such as power transmission and distribution networks. Although this brings about a number of benefits with regard to cost savings and efficiency, it unfortunately introduces a number of cybersecurity threats by utilizing these systems as an attack vector. Ultimately, this paper unveils a number of concerns regarding potential attacks on data communication streams given that such is a critical component enabling the use of UAV systems.
