RESTRICT Act explained: proposed TikTok ban is 'a PATRIOT Act for the digital age,' some lawmakers say

Abstract:

The RESTRICT Act is a bill that would allow digital products and services from foreign countries to be banned, most notably TikTok. Many companies, like TikTok, often host data from their users in servers or cloud-based storage. The bill is intended to stop foreign companies from gathering data on people in the United States. While mostly aimed at businesses, an individual can also be fined up to $250,000. However, the bill can also be used to ban VPNs and software allowing people to talk to each other.
