Beyond Huawei and TikTok: Untangling U.S. Concerns over Chinese Tech Companies and Digital Security

Abstract:

The recent call for the ban of TikTok represents the growing concern of the technological power of China. As a result of the 2017 national intelligence law, Chinese companies may be required to assist in intelligence operations. Companies such as ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, would be required to comply with the requests of the Chinese government, creating vulnerabilities for the exploitation of user data. This has led to fears of the ability of Chinese companies operating in the United States to gain access to data on US citizens. With the rise in popularity of TikTok within the US, the widespread collection of data on US citizens could present a significant national security threat. Distrust of Chinese companies is further exacerbated by the strategic aspirations of China as seen by its development in science and technology as well as its expansion in the South China Sea. This article reviews the potential effects of Chinese technology companies operating in the United States.
