Why Companies Are Forming Cybersecurity Alliances

Abstract:

Due to most governments’ limited interest in defensive capabilities in the cyber domain, companies have been left to mostly maintain their own security from cyber attacks. For this reason, several tech-based companies, such as Airbus, Cisco, HP, and Microsoft, are joining into cybersecurity alliances with each other. Some alliances, usually built around small groups of companies, mainly share intelligence or technical data to raise collective awareness in cybersecurity and expedite the production of security technologies. Other alliances deal with changing company practice towards vulnerabilities and making negotiations for digital peace and government support in an effort to uphold trust and accountability. These alliances are focused more on the general digital environment instead of individual companies and can vary in the amount they control corporate behavior. When joining theses alliances, companies consider the risk of cyber attacks and the willingness to share information with potential adversaries. While these alliances attempt to maintain a safe digital space for parties involved, they also push the conversation on cybersecurity practices forward for other companies and states, improving the digital world for many and demonstrating the necessary collaboration against digital conflict.
