This paper discusses US doctrine about why they call cyberspace “cyberspace” as well as discusses the role of language with respect to cybersecurity policy. The author then proposes a new category of ways to refer to cyber terms called “foundational metaphors”. This is followed by a detailed study of US military cybersecurity doctrine and strategy. Finally, the paper addresses the effects of language on how the US has developed in response to an ever-changing cyber battlefield.
