What is the dark web? How to use Tor to access the dark web

Abstract:

TOR, also known as The Onion Router, is a method of accessing the dark web through a network of routers that bounce requests around to prevent tracking of users through those requests. The dark web itself is essentially sites that are hosted purely within the TOR routers such that users never have to reveal themselves to access the site. By using TOR and the dark web, users can achieve very high levels of anonymity even when their local networks are fairly untrustworthy and might be attempting to spy on them. Furthermore, using the TOR browser will still allow accessing normal sites and even anonymizes the IP address by which that site is accessed. However, TOR cannot protect against people explicitly providing their identity online, such as by logging into a site or by posting their identifying details publicly, which still is a hole by which casual users may be identified.
