U.S. Suspects Hackers in China Breached About 4 Million People’s Records, Officials Say

Abstract:

In 2015, a nation-state actor compromised United States’ Office of Personnel Management and stole as many as four million government employee records. Investigators believed that China was behind the attack, and some speculate that this same entity may have been responsible for several private-sector healthcare breaches. China denied any involvement and asserted that this was just speculation on the United States’ part. This was one of several breaches of government databases at the time, which prompted some to criticize the lack of “state of the art defenses” employed in guarding sensitive government records.
