U.S. Blacklists Israeli Firm NSO Group Over Spyware

Abstract:

This article concerns a recent step the Biden administration took to crack down on the Israeli company, the NSO Group. In particular, in response to findings that the NSO Group supplied spyware, called Pegasus, to authoritarian governments who target dissidents, journalists, and human rights activists, the Biden administration blacklisted the NSO Group, in effect preventing the firm from acquiring American technology. This development is significant because it marks the strongest attempt so far that the U.S. has done to regulate spyware, a growing challenge which threatens cybersecurity.
