Three Individuals Charged with Alleged Roles in Twitter Hack

Abstract:

On July 15, 2020, over 100 Twitter accounts of politicians and celebrities were hacked, with the hackers using these accounts to tweeting promises that any Bitcoin deposits into a scam account would be returned doubled. The hackers managed to receive nearly $100,000 before the tweets were taken down. The hackers used a combination of social engineering and technical attacks to gain access to these accounts. However, despite the anonymity of Bitcoin, cyber-crime experts and officials were able to trace the money and de-anonymize the Bitcoin transactions in order to reveal the identities of the three hackers. The three charged with these allegations were a resident of the U.K., a resident of Florida, and a juvenile.
