Terrorist Use of Cyberspace and Cyber Terrorism: New Challenges and Responses

Abstract:

This book is part of the NATO Science for Peace and Security Series – D: Information and Communication Security.

As information and communications technology (ICT) plays a crucial role in the modernization process of the South Eastern European region (SEE), including countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Albania and Bulgaria, as well as being encouraged by the quest for Euro-Atlantic integration and necessity for direct foreign investment, SEE countries are in need to invest in the development of cyber technology. This has become a dominant area for social, economic and political interaction within the region with both positive and negative consequences.

The book demonstrates and examines the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Training Course (ATC), held in Ohrid, former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in December 2014, which addressed serious concerns about terrorist use of cyber technology in South Eastern Europe that not only has the potential to destabilize regional efforts to create a platform for increased development by creating a breeding ground for training extremists and launching of cyber attacks, but also represents a both direct and indirect threat to security and stability of other NATO partner states.
