Statement by NCSC Director William Evanina: Election Threat Update for the American Public

Abstract:

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence posted a press release regarding the threat of foreign influence on the upcoming 2020 election. The purpose of this press release was to keep the American public up-to-date and informed on possible ways that outside states could tamper with the election, so that the effects of these influences might be dampened. In particular, they named China, Russia, and Iran, as the external actors who posed the greatest threat to the election. China, who prefers Biden to win, has publicly criticized the actions of the Trump administration in the past few months. Similarly, Iran, who prefers Biden to win, has been spreading misinformation online in order to undermine the entire election process. Russia, who believes Biden would be less friendly to them than Trump, has openly criticized and even claimed corruption in regard to Biden’s campaign.
