Software Application Profile: Opal and Mica: open-source software solutions for epidemiological data management, harmonization and dissemination

While the creation of study databases for epidemiological research has led to the acceleration of improvements in health, security remains a concern. Sensitive information must be protected when using a database, creating a challenge for researchers conducting analysis. In order to improve information access and security, developments have been made in data management strategies. Opal and Mica represent two new software packages that enable the safe use of sensitive data for research. With these products, users are able to retrieve statistics by analyzing data stored on remote databases.
