The study looked at the hardware and software of Haier SmartCare, a commercial IoT device, and an Itron Centron CL200 Smart Meter, an industrial IoT device, and evaluated the security and vulnerability of these devices. The motivation behind the study is that as IoT devices become more common, so will attacks focusing on them. In these cases, there would be real-world consequences if the security is compromised, such as property damage or harming industrial systems. The study performed a variety of attacks on the systems and was able to hack into both devices.
