A Roadmap for Cybersecurity Research

Abstract:

This paper describes Homeland Security’s goals regarding cybersecurity research and the 11 specific fields that they hope to focus on. As systems, networks, and cyberattacks become more and more advanced by the day, it is important to invest resources and research into exploring ways to improve America’s cybersecurity. Some of the research goals that I find especially significant are “scalable trustworthy systems”, metrics for system trustworthiness, and ways to combat threats, like malware or ransomware. It’s important to focus on the system-side, which deals with creating more secure systems from a computer science perspective, to also designing policies and metrics to ensure that companies and organizations have secure systems. Attacks have the ability to disrupt the economic sector significantly, and can even affect the day-to-day lives of citizens, such as access to electricity or other cyberinfrastructure. Therefore, as the article states, it should be our country’s goal and is in our best interest to “tackle the vulnerabilities of today and envision those of the future”.
