OpenAI has been accused of violating Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) by providing false information about individuals. It can be difficult to track down the origin of assertions made by generative AI, and researchers are still figuring out how to correct false data unintentionally embedded in AI models. Because of this, OpenAI claimed it was unable to comply with an EU resident’s request that they correct ChatGPT’s false statement regarding their date of birth. If OpenAI does not comply with GDPR regulations regarding user data, the EU may impose penalties up to 4% of the company’s annual revenue.
