Nuclear deterrence and cyber warfare: coexistence or competition?

Abstract:

This article explores the increasingly complex relationship between nuclear deterrence and cyber warfare. While historically distinct, the integration of cyber capabilities into national security strategies presents new challenges for nuclear crisis management and deterrence stability. Cyber attacks on nuclear command, control, and communication systems could mislead decision-makers, potentially leading to erroneous nuclear launches. Additionally, the strategic integration of cyber attacks in nuclear crisis scenarios may undermine the traditional concepts of nuclear deterrence by introducing unpredictable risks and complications. The article argues for a reevaluation of nuclear strategies in light of cyber threats, emphasizing the need for adaptive measures in both domains to maintain global security.
