North Korean IT Workers Use Real-Time Deepfakes to Infiltrate Organizations Through Remote Jobs

Abstract:

North Korea’s new strategy to raise revenue for their country is not necessarily hacking U.S. companies (although they still do that), but it is to join U.S. companies and send the money made back to North Korea. To get the job, they use AI and specifically deepfake technology to trick U.S. companies into hiring North Korean workers. When they are hired, they use cryptocurrency to send money back to North Korea. Deepfakes and AI makes some of these workers hard to detect in interviews, but as industry wises up to this strategy, some are recommending new deepfake detecting technology to ensure that their interviewers and HR are not tricked into sending money to North Korea.
