This article is about 12 Chinese nationals that have been charged by the US Government for a “global cyber espionage campaign.” Of these 12 people, 10 were hackers for hire while 2 were government officials. This group had been targeting various US government agencies, religious groups and news organizations. Allegedly, these attacks were conducted under the direction of China’s Ministry of Public Security, and some of the victims include the U.S Treasury Department, which had a major breach in late 2024. These charges brought to light the hacker-for-hire “ecosystem” in China, where private companies are contracted by the Chinese government to target different groups in organizations, which allows the Chinese government to have plausible deniability, which highlights the cybersecurity threat that China poses.
