Interpreting China’s Pursuit of Cyber Sovereignty and its Views on Cyber Deterrence

Abstract:

In recent times, China has made large and drastic moves in order to secure its place in cyberspace, even going so far as making it a central part of its governance structure with tools such as the Great Firewall. On top of this, China has repeated made motions to disrupt current practices and institutions in order to establish its sovereignty in the cyber domain – kicking out or limiting influence from outside organizations and companies. All of this results in China being a formidable member of cyberspace, and we need to take consideration into how the U.S. would handle or prevent a potential cyber threat from them if they were to make a move.
