The Impact of Social Media on Cybersecurity

Abstract:

With a massive amount of users in social media, cybersecurity surrounding social media has utmost importance. The author points out that with “[a]lmost 4.8 billion people worldwide use one or more social media platforms, or just over 59% of the global population” security regarding social media should be a focus of individual companies along with individuals themselves (Chin). The author describes different possible attacks and stresses the importance of individuals, who work for companies, to avoid these attacks. Malicious third parties can harm companies by attacking individuals, who are connected to these companies. Therefore, the author suggests companies educate their personnel and take action on increasing cybersecurity regarding social media. Furthermore, the author recommends that companies create guidelines and regulations for their employees, as these employees are seen as a weak point in security. Additionally, the author suggests companies create incident plans for when the company’s or an employee’s security is compromised.
