Cybersecurity attacks have become dramatically more sophisticated over recent years, and are being executed by organizations as opposed to individuals. Often these perpetrators are able to gain access, not because of any technical vulnerability, but because of the many ways that humans choose to leave themselves unsecured, opting instead for convenience. A 2010 study set up a cluster of computers to act as prime targets for spam attacks, and by means of a web-crawling software were able to uncover the supply chain behind those spam attacks. The results showed the existence of an unregulated but largely sophisticated economy revolving around the sale of counterfeit products through spam.
