Google has a Threat Intelligence Group that is a cybersecurity team that identifies, analyzes and responses to cybersecurity threats. This group recently released a report that highlighted the increasing interactions between cybercrime and “state-backed cyber operations.” This report warns that cybercrime that is financially motivated is still a threat to national security because it damages the “economic competitiveness” and puts strain on cyber defenses, weakening them. It also takes notes of countries such as Russia, China and North Korea that benefit from some cybercrime, and emphasizes how important it is to collaborate internationally in order to effectively address cybercrime.
