As technological capabilities have expanded, the automotive industry has continually integrated more complex electronic control units into their vehicles. However, as these “infotainment” systems have become more common and complex, there has been little research about the security of these systems. For many consumers, it is common to connect personal devices and share data with these systems, and this paper sought to find whether these systems are trustworthy. Overall, it was found that these systems are susceptible to probable malware and infostealer attacks, and there are no significant incentives in place for automotive manufacturers to mitigate this risk. Instead, legislation is likely necessary to protect consumer data.
