In 2025, the Chinese AI lab, DeepSeek, raised concerns regarding the United States’capability to maintain its status as a world leader in the global AI competition. This article provides an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the Chinese AI language model, DeepSeek, compared to the widely adopted American AI language model, ChatGPT. It examines the two leading AI chatbots in terms of performance, cost, accuracy, privacy concerns, and applications. The article highlights DeepSeek’s “Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) approach, cost- effectiveness, and innovative training methods” as significant differentiators from ChatGPT. It advises selecting between the two models based on specific user needs and recommends ChatGPT for users who address confidential data.
