Cybersecurity Policy
The Satellite Industry Association is a United States-based trade association providing representation of the leading domestic satellite operators, service providers, manufacturers, launch services providers, and ground equipment suppliers. Since 1995, SIA has advocated on behalf of the commercial U.S. satellite industry on policy, regulatory, and legislative issues affecting the satellite business. This statement on cybersecurity policy for the commercial satellite industry aims to give an overview of the challenges faced by satellite operators from cyber threats, their particular vulnerability from their inherently digital nature, and SIA’s involvement in government and advocacy groups for creating cybersecurity standards and norms of behavior, internationally and domestically. SIA recommends three core principles of cybersecurity to its industry partners: voluntary, industry-led efforts and public-private partnerships are the optimal way to address cybersecurity at the national or international levels, robust cybersecurity is aided by voluntary information sharing, free from fear of adverse consequences, and that satellite industry organizations should actively address cybersecurity using industry best practices for risk management. This webpage illustrates how the satellite industry is thinking about cybersecurity and avenues that trade organizations like SIA are advocating and working with regulators to create best practices.
