Cyber Ransom in the Information Age: A Call to Arms Against the Hackers

Abstract:

After the recent attacks on the Colonial Pipeline, it has become evident that ransomware has become a major tool to create chaos in modern society. Healthcare industries are a prime target, as medical records can be used to steal identity and extort individuals as well as hospitals. Since ransoms are most often paid, healthcare organizations must share information about how they were attacked to allow for other organizations to improve their security networks, similar to the airline industry. Release of medical information can lead to privacy concerns for many, as well, and could lead to changes in the way insurance companies view certain individuals.
