Cyber-Physical Coordinated Attacks: The Emerging Complexity of Crisis Management

Abstract:

Cybersecurity threats in our modern age are becoming multi-modal: that is, they “take advantage of the operational silos between organizations” in order to affect multiple outlets at once. Attacks that utilize traditional cyber-pathways while attempting to disrupt the physical infrastructure that enables them are known as Cyber-Physical Coordinated attacks. As belligerent technology develops, the intentions of adversaries in the cyber world becomes increasingly more disruptive. Weaponization of public utilities, infrastructure, and industry vulnerabilities is having increasing effectiveness at disrupting our society from the top-down. Navigating this complex threat landscape involves cooperation between once independent sectors along with effective crisis management tools.
