Cyber Conflict in Political Science: A Review of Methods and Literature

Abstract:

This paper, written by Robert Gorwa and Max Smeets for the 2019 ISA Annual Convention dives into all articles pertaining to cyber conflict in a top-100 political science journal from 1990 to 2018. Once the authors had the dataset of papers, achieved through keyword analysis among other criteria, they preformed a bibliometric analysis to identify the most important articles and topics. Additionally, they reviewed the articles to find the most widely utilized methods the authors used in their papers. Their findings include the fact that the number of papers matching the authors criteria drastically increased over the years, largely due to the infancy of this field. Additionally, they feel that the field has focused disproportionately on theoretical work and not enough time has been spent on gathering empirical results. Finally, they explore the topic of case studies to discuss the fact that the cyber security authors are not fully taking advantage of the work that has been put in to the political science field in recent years and state that these areas of research seem very promising for future work.
