The China-US Quantum Race

Abstract:

In 2022, Researchers in China have claimed to have developed an algorithm capable of breaking public-key encryption using quantum technology, leading to concerns about quantum breakthroughs in the near future and the potential impact on national security. Quantum information science utilizes quantum physics to enhance information processing, analysis, and transmission through quantum computing, quantum encryption, and quantum sensing. The race for quantum superiority between the United States and China has significant implications, including cybersecurity, market value, and disruptive innovations. While the U.S. currently leads in quantum computing and sensing, China has made strides in quantum communications and patents. Both countries face challenges in scaling up quantum technologies. It is crucial for the Biden administration to strengthen U.S. quantum defenses by fostering international collaboration, securing the supply chain, sharing threat intelligence with industry partners, and potentially implementing trade restrictions on quantum-related technologies. The U.S. must assert and maintain its position as a leader in quantum technology to avoid falling behind in the quantum race
