Wang explores the effects of China’s “Great Firewall” on the people and how it has effected Nationalism. Although this has existed since the 2000s, China used to allow some freedom of speech on the internet via songs, cartoons, articles etc. However, within the past ten years (2010) the Chinese government has cracked down on their censorship by banning many websites and applications, enforcing extreme punishments on those deemed to promote anti-Chinese messaging, and feeding only specific media to it’s citizens. This has instilled fear and silence in many, and it is not just the government that is pushing these beliefs. Many have bought into the nationalist propaganda, and report those who may not share the same sentiment, regardless if the message was harmful or not. Even with the extreme punishment if caught for disobeying the Chinese Government, citizens have still found ways to access censored content through secret websites and VPNs, and even this is getting more challenging to get away with.
