Children’s Data Hacked After School Software Firm Missed Basic Security Step, Internal Report Says

Abstract:

PowerSchool is a company used by tens of millions of students. Their Student Information System is well known and used in many U.S. schools. The company did not take basic precautions in protecting these students’ data. The Student Information System was part of the breach and included information such as name, grade, school, address, birthday, social security number, etc of students. The company was required to pay a ransom to the hacker in order to have the stolen data deleted. Ensuring that multi-factor authentication is used is one way to further protect students’ data in the future.
