Chatgpt and More: What Ai Chatbots Mean for the Future of Cybersecurity

Abstract:

Phishing scams typically rely on email and need compelling content to make people give money to scammers. To look realistic, these emails should have correct grammar and spelling. However, since scammers originate from around the world, it can be hard for them to write emails with a natural tone and message in a different language.
ChatGPT potentially offers an extremely useful tool for formatting phishing emails. While certain safeguards are in place to avoid direct phishing email generation, it is capable of generating convincing templates for certain click-worthy events such as bonuses, or a company software update.
ChatGPT could also be used to facilitate other malicious activity that would otherwise be tedious and time intensive, like creating fake social accounts. Like any new technology, there is a potential for abuse that people should consider and be aware of. However, with the ability to understand and generate code, it is possible that it could be used to enhance cybersecurity capabilities by identifying/preventing common security flaws.
