A case study in malware research ethics

Abstract:

In this article, the author examines the ethics of teaching about the technical workings of malware in a classroom. While some argue that malware does not need to be taught in depth in an cyber-ethics class, “in the same way that a standard ethicist need not contemplate how to commit crimes”. “They only needed to worry about how to form ethical systems that would discourage those practices.” However, malware can also be interesting to study due to the fact that it often disables cyber-systems in “interesting and sometimes brilliant ways”. Throughout the article, he examines the different arguments that have been posed for each side and then reference a case study he facilitated in conjunction with instructor George Ledin as a cornerstone for his analysis of malware ethics coursework
