A cybersecurity glitch triggered a global technology outage

Abstract:

In July 2024, the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike suffered a technical error during a software update that caused widespread outages across the globe. The incident caused disruptions in essential services, prompting flight delays, surgery cancellations, and outages of emergency services. This caused many to consider a reevaluation of cybersecurity protocols and the resilience of technological infrastructures. Ultimately, the security and functioning of cyber systems are vulnerable not just to bad actors, but to small, seemingly benign mistakes as well. Thus, prioritizing a more critical view of how we vet certain aspects of these systems is crucial to solid cybersecurity.
