Europe Steps up Cybersecurity Efforts in Response to the War in Ukraine

Abstract:

In this article from Satellite Today, the author focuses mostly on the Viasat attack that happened at the beginning of the war (2022) in Ukraine. It is interesting to dive deeper into the attack that the other articles draw so much inspiration from. Spokespeople from both the European commission and the European Defense Agency argued that Europe needs to improve the security of their satellites after the Russian attack on Viasat. The quotes from those two are a reaction to the attack, and it is interesting to see how a field rebounds from such a catastrophic blow. This article also furthers how important satellites are for modern warfare, with so many systems relying on communication from military satellites. While the focus on increasing the security of satellites is great, the reactionary nature of the concern is telling. How many fields have cyber attacks at the forefront of their meetings? If attackers are capable of prying secrets away from the NSA and the Pentagon, we need to come to grips with the fact that cyber attacks will never go away, despite how much various fields focus on tightening gaps in security.
