Anatomy of a Cyberattack
This paper describes the impact of a multi-institutional, systemwide cyberattack on a hospital, which resulted in the shutdown of various patient care, operational, and communication systems for over 25 days. The laboratory was particularly affected, with challenges in communication and laboratory management leading to the need for restructuring leadership during the crisis. To remain operational, the hospital developed an incident command team, alternative methods of communication, and innovative management strategies. However, trainees were negatively impacted, with a significant impact on their education. The paper highlights the importance of incorporating resident trainees into the daily administrative activities of the incident command team as a valuable lab management experience during prolonged downtime.
