The well known attack of NotPetya on shipping company Maersk shows how cyber attacks often go past national or physical boundaries. Originally, the malware was targetting Ukrainian infrastructure but quickly spread globally, halting operations in many ports. The attack utilized stolen hacking tools from the NSA and a French researcher and took advantage of older machines that had not been updated as well as the weak cyber defence of Maersk. The full recovery from the attack took 2 months, resulting in an estimated $10 billion loss in damages, not including the damages to companies dependent on Maersk. This resulted in the company prioritizing its cybersecurity efforts and approving almost all recommendations, a lesson that should be adopted by other firms as attacks evolve.
