Russian APT Phishes Kazakh Gov’t for Strategic Intel

Abstract:

Russian hacking groups obtained various classified documents, which they used as part of a phishing attack on Kazak diplomats. Upon opening the email and the attached document, the Kazak diplomats would be prompted to enable macros for the document, which would actually open a backdoor on their computer. The exact goal of the Russian group is currently unknown, but is likely connected to Russia’s current policy towards its foreign policy towards its neighbors.
