Commerce Department Prohibits WeChat and TikTok Transactions to Protect the National Security of the United States

Abstract:

After President Trump’s Executive Orders in August that targeted two Chinese-owned mobile applications TikTok and WeChat as potential risks to national security, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced regulations on the access and use of these two applications. They cited concerns for national security and privacy of American people’s personal data, as the applications could easily be exploited by the Chinese government to collect American citizen’s data. The prohibitions on these two applications include banning monetary transactions through WeChat in the United States, any third-party softwares or services that use either application in any way, and forbidding any services that enable the usage of both applications.
