It Is Time to Democratize Wargaming Using Generative AI

Abstract:

This article discusses the potential benefits of utilizing AI in the creation and implementation of wargames, arguing that AI would help to enhance decision making processes in military planning. Generative AI and LLMs are able to create synthetic game agents to represent diverse stakeholders, which would help to reduce the reliance on human players, creating a more efficient system. In addition, the authors explain that AI would be able to generate multiple hypothetical scenarios at a much lower cost and would allow easier replication standards for wargames, helping to maintain consistent continuity of information. Finally, the authors argue in favor of the integration of AI technologies into official military education and training. Particularly, the authors emphasize the importance of teaching military professionals how to effectively use and leverage AI-driven analytical tools. The article highlights existent initiatives, such as Task Force Lima and the Global Information Dominance Exercise, as steps in the right direction to establish the use of AI into the military strategic analysis and wargaming simulations.
