Testing human ability to detect ‘deepfake’ images of human faces

Abstract:

In this study, researchers investigated people’s ability to distinguish between real images of human faces and fake ones generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Participants were shown a mix of real and AI-generated images and asked to identify which were fake. Some participants received advice on how to spot fake images, while others did not. The results revealed that, on average, people could only correctly identify the images about 60% of the time, regardless of whether they received advice. Moreover, participants were overconfident in their judgments, even when they were wrong. The researchers express concern about these findings, given the potential for AI-generated fake images to be used for criminal purposes.
