Chinese security contractor I-Soon had documents leaked with information detailing how they spied on Chinese citizens and foreigners. The targets included dissident groups in China, as well as Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The tools can unmask social media identities, break into emails, and hack wifi networks to surveil and suppress dissent. Clients included China’s Ministry of Public Security and provincial police bureaus. The hacks aim to control public opinion, curb anti-government sentiment, and flood overseas social media with pro-Beijing content. At this time, it’s unknown who leaked the files.
